With summer in full swing and July 4th celebrations just around the corner, now is the perfect time to focus on sun safety. While sunlight is an excellent source of Vitamin D, too much exposure can be harmful—especially for seniors. As we age, our skin becomes more delicate, making it more susceptible to sunburn and long-term damage. Additionally, some medications can increase sun sensitivity, raising the risk of burns and other complications.
Since July is UV Safety Month, our assisted living caregivers at The Residence want to share some essential sun safety tips to help older adults enjoy the summer while staying protected.
Sun Safety Tips for Seniors
1. Apply (and Reapply) Sunscreen
Sunscreen should be a daily essential, even for short trips outdoors. Whether going for a walk or tending to a garden, seniors should apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. This level of protection blocks about 97% of the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays, reducing the risk of sunburn and skin cancer.
For best coverage, consider using a spray sunscreen as a base and following up with a lotion to ensure all areas are protected—including those harder-to-reach spots. Don’t forget to reapply every two hours, or more often if sweating or swimming!
2. Seek Shade During Peak Hours
The sun’s UV rays are strongest between 10 AM and 4 PM, which means limiting outdoor activities during these hours is a smart choice. If seniors must be outside, finding shade under a tree, umbrella, or awning can help reduce direct sun exposure. However, it’s important to note that shade alone doesn’t provide complete protection—so sunscreen is still a must!
3. Dress for Sun Protection
Clothing can serve as an extra barrier against the sun’s rays. Long-brimmed hats shield the face, neck, and ears, while sunglasses with 99-100% UVA and UVB protection help protect the eyes from harmful light. Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen offer added coverage without causing overheating.
